The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) is embarking on a fact finding mission to Malawi to meet with trade unionists in the south east African country. The STUC visit will build on initial meetings held between the two trade union centres in April 2008 in Inverness.

STUC Reaction to inflation figures

Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary Grahame Smith said "Today’s figures confirm what we have long stated; the pay rates of working people are not responsible for rising inflation. Rising fuel and food costs are, and it’s ordinary working people who have to bear the consequences. The low paid in particular are disproportionately affected by rising food and fuel costs and I have no doubt that an RPI of 4.5% will increase the determination of Scottish local government workers to secure more than the 2.5% pay increases currently on offer from their employers.

STUC calls for local government employers and Scottish Government to return to negotiating table with realistic offer

Speaking ahead of the eve of the one day strike on Wednesday 20th August of local government and civil service workers, STUC General Secretary Grahame Smith today called for the employers to return to the negotiating table with wage offers reflecting the real prices increases being faced by public sector workers in Scotland.
