STUC on the occupation of Simclar, Kilwinning

Commenting on the occupation of the Simclar plant in Kilwinning by workers sacked on Monday STUC General Secretary, Grahame Smith, said: “The anger of the Simclar workers is entirely understandable. They have been treated disgracefully by an owner who is experienced in closing plants but not in dealing with an organised workforce.

Following the fine of £980,000 imposed by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) on the Nationwide Building Society the STUC has expressed its anger that corporate crime and failures in the finance industry are more likely to attract meaningful sanctions than courts can impose on organisations that kill or maim their workers.

Real, but oh so slow, progress on long hours in Scotland

Unpaid overtime is on the decline in Scotland, but progress is so slow that it will take until 2025 before no-one is doing more than 10 hours unpaid extra work every week, according to an analysis of official statistics published by the TUC today (Friday).

STUC support Bin the Bomb March

Scotland’s for Peace is organising a march and rally on the theme “Bin the Bomb – don’t replace Trident” in Glasgow on Saturday 24 February 2007. The march will begin at 11.30am in George Square and will culminate in an indoor rally at 12.30pm. The rally will end a series of meetings in Scotland this week as part of the “Bin the Bomb” roadshow. Speakers at the rally will be STUC President Katrina Purcell, Cardinal Keith O’Brien, Rev Alan McDonald, Bruce Kent, Jeremy Corbyn, Alex Salmond MP, and representatives from UNISON and TGWU, amongst others.

STUC calls on political parties to improve the quality and parameters of economic debate

Speaking at the Holyrood Conference ‘Economic Development: Smarter and More Successful?’ STUC General Secretary Grahame Smith criticised all Scotland’s political parties for limiting the debate on Scotland’s economy to a narrow set of issues, for failing to challenge current orthodoxy and for paying disproportionate attention to the views of a select few.
