The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) at its Annual congress being held in Dundee will this morning (Tuesday 20 April 10.45 hrs) debate two emergency motions on the consequences of the volcanic eruption in Iceland.
The debates will centre on the resultant crisis facing the aviation industry and the lack of UK vessels available for emergencies.
The motion on ‘The closure of UK Airspace’ from Unite the Union highlights the situation affecting the civil aviation industry and its concern that the financial losses being incurred by airlines could have a knock on effect impacting workers in the aviation sector. Unite’s motion expresses serious concerns at the impact the current crisis will have on their member’ health, safety and security of employment.
The motion emphasises that workers’ existing terms and conditions of employment should not be negatively impacted as a consequence of the crisis
The motion on ‘UK Shipping’ from Nautilus International highlights the plans by the UK Government to requisition merchant ships to repatriate Britons stranded overseas. It expresses concern and the dependence on foreign vessels at a time of crisis. At the last requisition during the Falklands war the UK fleet was around 1,000 vessels the figure is now less than 300 and the number of UK seafarers has fallen from almost 55,000 to barely 20,000. The motion condemns UK ship owners for leaving the red ensign because of regulation to end pay discrimination and calls on the Government to protect the British shipping industry and to stimulate increased recruitment and training of British seafarers.
