The General Secretary of the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC), Grahame Smith, has today written to the Director General of the BBC expressing the STUC’s deep disappointment at the BBC’s decision not to air the Disasters Emergency Committee Gaza Appeal.
In his letter to the Director General Grahame Smith said
“This is simply not a matter of partiality. The issue is about people suffering and dying in a part of the globe and the independent charities’ ability to provide aid through the support of the British people.
“The BBC is taking a particularly dangerous course, where it is making judgements on the merits of supporting people who are innocent victims of conflict. The STUC shares the view, expressed by many, that it does not matter if the hospital or school has been destroyed by an earthquake or a bomb, innocent people need aid to assist them. It is deeply disturbing that the BBC refuses to acknowledge this fact.
“I urge the Corporation to acknowledge the widespread opposition and to urgently reverse its decision. “
