The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) today welcomed the announcement by Employment Relations Minister Pat McFadden of the Government’s intention to amend regulations so that tips can no longer count towards payment of the national minimum wage.
The announcement came on the same day as the Government started its consultation on tipping in the hospitality industry.
STUC Deputy General Secretary Dave Moxham said:
“Very few people realise that some unscrupulous employers are lining their pockets with the tips which customers leave to thank the staff who serve them.
“We welcome the Government’s announcement. By forcing employers to be clear about how they distribute tips we can close this loop-hole.
“STUC supports the Fair Tips Charter of it affiliated union, UNITE and believes it provides the basis for effective Government action to address this injustice.”
