STUC Women's Conference 2008 has opened this morning at the Perth Concert Hall. The conference will run from Monday 17th until Tuesday 18th November 2008.
With the theme ‘Think Global, Act Local’, the 2008 STUC Women’s Conference will be considering a wide range of issues, including: protecting and representing female migrant workers; campaigning to tackle violence against women in the home and in the workplace; defending and extending women’s rights at work; and tackling low wages and child poverty.
With women making up 60% of the finance sector workforce, predominantly in the lower paid jobs, speakers will be calling for Scottish and Westminster government action to ensure employment security for employees in the finance sector. Recent announcements on BT and other call-centre job losses will also impact heavily on women's employment.
Speakers to the conference will include Shona Robison MSP Minister for Public Health; Johann Lamont MSP, Deputy Leader of the Scottish Labour Party, Elish Angiolini Lord Advocate; Isobel Lindsay Scottish CND, and Julie Bindel, journalist and campaigner.
