STUC General Secretary Grahame Smith said:
“The Chancellor was heavy on sympathy for low paid workers but light on any action to support them.
“His selective use of statistics to wrongly imply that public sector workers get higher wage rises than private sector workers* was not well received nor was his continued insistence that the fair and reasonable wage rises being claimed will cause a wage inflation spiral.
“Equally, low paid workers need to hear something very soon on action to bear down on fuel bills.
“The STUC has called for fairer and more equitable taxation solutions and for a more progressive system of taxation to fund public services. It is incumbent on the Chancellor to act to protect the poorest in society whilst bearing down on the richest, many of whom who continue to evade tax.”
