The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) joined in the protests in response to today’s announcement by the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) that passport processing work in Glasgow would be phased out by the end of the year.
STUC General Secretary Grahame Smith said “This announcement will come as a body blow to the staff that provide this vital service. The STUC support Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) in challenging these restructuring plans and fighting any plans for compulsory redundancies.
He added “It is also of great concern that, of all the UK, Scotland will be the only home nation without a passport processing function. I have no doubt that this step will not improve the passport service provision in Scotland, particularly for those in emergency travel cases, who will now have to deal with passport office locations outside Scotland.
