The Scottish Trades Union Congress has today called for more concerted action to address the gender pay gap, to create better paid, quality part-time work.
Commenting on a new TUC Report, “Closing the Gender Pay Gap”, which shows that the gender pay gap more than trebles when women reach their 30s, the STUC General Secretary, Grahame Smith, said:
“This report really underlines the penalty paid by women in their 30s, simply for having children. We need action to reverse this appalling situation, through the provision of better paid, quality part-time work, real flexible working for parents and carers, and long-term action to address the segregation of our workforce along male – female lines”.
Mr Smith continued:
“Women are losing out in their pay packets just at the time when they need more money to support a family. And employers are losing out too, as they fail to utilise the skills of women workers. This is damaging not only to individuals and families, and also to the wider economy.”
