Tomorrow morning (29 February) the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) is holding a conference on the European Union Reform Treaty: the Lisbon Treaty. The Conference aims to raise greater awareness of the new EU Reform Treaty amongst Scottish trade unionists, and to consider the arguments both for and against a referendum on its ratification in the UK.
The Speakers who have agreed to address the event include John Monks, General Secretary of European Trades Union Confederation David Martin MEP Ian Davidson MP Kathleen Walker-Shaw, GMB European Officer Richard Arthur, Head of TU Law, Thompsons Solicitors (Bristol) Speaking prior to the conference STUC General Secretary Grahame Smith said. “The Lisbon Treaty and the question of a referendum have generated much debate within the trade union movement, throughout the country and all of the European Union member states. The STUC is delighted to have a panel of speakers who, I am sure, will guarantee a lively and informative debate on this very topical issue.
“The Conference is aimed at all trade unionists, full time officials, lay reps, shop stewards and ordinary union members, both male and female to come and join in the debate.”
