80th Annual STUC Women’s Conference will call for more action to tackle Violence Against Women
Tuesday – Wednesday 13-14 November 2007 City Chambers, George Square, Glasgow
Over 130 women workers from across Scotland will gather in Glasgow on Tuesday and Wednesday 13-14 November 2007 to call for more action to tackle violence against women. A wide ranging agenda will see debates on human trafficking, abortion rights, closing the gender pay gap and poverty.
On Tuesday 13 November Conference will be addressed by Nicola Sturgeon MPS, the Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing. Conference will also hear from Elaine C Smith, and the new Scotland Commissioner for the Equality and Human Rights Commission, Morag Alexander. Conference will be chaired by Patrician McLaren of the Glasgow Trades Union Council.
Women workers will mark the 80th Annual Conference, with a Special Session celebrating the achievements of women trade unionists. Students from the RSAMD and a women’s choir “The Lone Rangers will entertain delegates; there will be a civic welcome from Glasgow City Council and an 80th birthday cake.

A Special Session at 2pm on Tuesday 13 November 2007, will look back on women trade unionists contribution over the years, and look forward to the challenges still faced to take forward the gender agenda. This session will include contributions from the STUC Women’s Committee, the performance of “The World Turned Upside Down” by students of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and the Oran Mor Choir.
