STUC to Discuss Latest Asbestos Injustice with MSPs
The Scottish Trades Union Congress is to meet MSPs later today to discuss possible changes in Scottish legislation which will reverse the House of Lords decision that will deny pleural plaques sufferers their rightful compensation.
Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary, said:
“The ludicrous decision taken by the House of Lords which states that asbestos victims who develop the lung condition pleural plaques cannot claim compensation needs to be addressed.
“We believe that the Scottish Parliament can act and welcome the proposed Bill being put forward by Clydeside Action and Frank Maguire from Thompsons Solicitors. The Scottish Parliament has a proud record of securing cross-party support for previous asbestos injustices and this unfortunately, is the latest of many.
“The STUC will also be meeting with Kenny McAskill later today to discuss a number of issues and we will be asking if the Scottish Government plans to support this Bill. This would ensure that the Bill could be progressed as quickly as possible and rectify the perverse decision of the House of Lords”.
