STUC Celebrates 40th Anniversary of the Abortion Act
The STUC is this week celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the passing of the Abortion Act.
Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary, said:
“Access to safe, legal abortion is fundamental to women’s equality, autonomy and freedom. It is, therefore, disturbing to note that the debate on abortion is becoming increasingly dominated by sensationalist and ill-informed reporting in the media.
“The STUC has always recognised that forcing women to carry unwanted pregnancies to term has the potential to damage their health and social wellbeing. Any attempt to curtail reproductive freedoms impacts on working class women more than those who can afford to access private health care providers.
“The STUC urges MPs at Westminster to defend women’s current legal rights and to reject any proposals to restrict the provisions of the Abortion Act.”
