The STUC today welcomed the Scottish Government’s publication of its lifelong learning skills strategy for Scotland.
Grahame Smith, General Secretary of the STUC said: “The STUC welcomes the Scottish Government’s ‘Skills for Scotland’ strategy, and in particular its focus on the workplace which had been missing in previous initiatives. We look forward to rising to the challenges set for the trade union movement within the document.
“Over 70 percent of those who will be in the workforce in 2020 have already completed their compulsory education. Consequently, we do need to upskill our current workforce, improve people’s ability to get into and remain in employment, and address deficiencies in literacy and numeracy. The Skills Strategy also needs to tackle underemployment and structural disadvantage that faces sections of the community including women, disabled people and Black and minority ethnic people”.
“The Scottish Government’s recognition of the role of trade unions in bringing workers back to learning is appreciated, and the STUC will work with the Government and other stakeholders to realise the vision of everyone contributing positively to Scotland’s economic and social growth”.
