Speaking on World Water Day 2007, Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary said:
“The STUC and the Scottish Water trade unions are using World Water Day 2007 to publish ‘It’s Scotland’s Water’, an important discussion paper on the future of Scotland’s public water and sewerage services.
“The STUC believes Scotland’s water services can be saved from privatisation by turning away from the market model and moving towards democratisation. The discussion paper sets out a number of ways this might be achieved.
“The Scottish Water model continues to be under threat from those vested interests excited at the prospect of guaranteed profits flowing from a privatised industry. Fortunately, the public service model still enjoys widespread support in Scotland. There is a growing awareness that water and sewerage services are more than just an essential public service. Given the global water crisis, a public owned and accountable water industry is one of Scotland’s greatest assets.
“We warmly welcome the views of all interested stakeholders on the ideas set out in the paper.”
