STUC encouraged by Labour Market Statistics
Commenting on the new labour market statistics for Scotland published today (14th February 2007), Stephen Boyd, STUC Assistant Secretary said,
“The employment rate is hugely encouraging with Scotland now 1.5% points ahead of England and substantially ahead of Wales and Northern Ireland.
“However, the loss of manufacturing jobs continues to be a major concern with another 8000 jobs lost in the year to September 2005. This comes at a time when many European competitors are growing their manufacturing sectors. It is now time to reinvigorate the debate on how to retain Scotland’s manufacturing base”.
