UNION LEARNING IS THE ROUTE TO A SUCCESSFUL SCOTLAND

December 5th 2006

Tomorrow, Wednesday 6 December, Union Learning Representatives (ULRs) from Aberdeen, Glasgow, Motherwell, Dundee, Ayrshire and Inverness will travel to the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh to participate in a meeting with MSPs and Parliamentary Assistants to discuss the lifelong learning agenda. This meeting is a part of Trade Union Week at the Scottish Parliament 4 – 7 December 2006.

“Union Learning: Route to a Successful Scotland” is the theme of the meeting, which will include a presentation of trade union learning achievements and a discussion of how local ULRs see the path of trade union led lifelong learning in the future. ULRs will have an opportunity to highlight their main concerns regarding lifelong learning by directly engaging with members of the Scottish Parliament – both its successes and where it falls short. This opportunity will give ULRs a chance to influence the lifelong learning agenda throughout Scotland.

STUC General Secretary, Grahame Smith, said:

“Trade Union Week will give Union Learning Reps an opportunity to showcase their experience in meeting the learning needs of workers in Scotland.

“It is testament to the hard work and dedication of ULRs and the commitment from MSPs to the learning agenda in Scotland.

“The STUC hopes that by giving ULRs the opportunity to work hand in hand with their representatives in the Scottish Parliament, we can influence lifelong learning to meet the needs of all adult learners in Scotland.”

STUC Skills & Lifelong Learning Team Manager, Sylvia O’Grady, said:

“Trade Union Week offers the rare opportunity to bring together ULRs across a range of unions to share experience and access support available from their MSPs.

“Unions, through their own education and learning departments and through ULRs in the workplace, are contributing a tremendous amount to the Lifelong Learning Agenda.

“The Skills & Lifelong Learning Team supports this work and is helping to drive the skills agenda forward. We hope Ministers will continue to have a key role in this process.”
