The STUC will today (Monday 4 December) launch its manifesto for the 2007 Scottish Parliamentary Elections. The STUC will promote the key measures outlined in the manifesto during a series of meetings with the main parties at Scottish Parliament this week. The manifesto makes a number of recommendations across seven themes;
· Growing the Scottish Economy
· Meeting the Global Challenge
· Building a Fairer Scotland
· Delivering World Class Public Services
· Protecting Scotland’s Workforce
· Securing Energy Supply
· Investing in Scotland’s Future
Newly appointed STUC General, Secretary Grahame Smith, will say:
“In a world where the future is increasingly uncertain and susceptible to colossal global forces, both natural and man-made, important decisions need to be taken about the type of Scotland in which we want to live and work.
“We want a Scotland where our social and environmental well-being sits easily alongside the pursuit of economic growth; where a dynamic private sector economy sits easily alongside comprehensive, quality public services – publicly-owned and run. We want a Scotland where equality and tolerance prevail and extensive civic participation is the norm. We want a Scotland where community and co-operation are valued and where unions can play their role as a full social partner.
“Our manifesto sets out a range of policies that we believe will take Scotland nearer to that vision. They are our contribution to the debate about the journey Scotland should take in the next four years; the destination of which is a Scotland in these early years of the 21st Century, where fairness, equality and justice shared by all of our citizens underpin our economic prosperity.”
