STUC disappointed at Cardinal O'Brien's attack on Sexual Health and Relationship Strategy The Scottish Trade Union Congress today expressed its disappointment at Cardinal Keith O'Brien's attack on the Scottish Executive over its Sexual Health and Relationship Strategy.
The STUC responded to the Executive's Consultation earlier this year and welcomed its open, positive and sensitive tone that recognised the complex and diverse, personal, social, emotional, ethical and health aspects of developing a successful sexual health and relationships strategy.
Speaking today STUC Assistant Secretary Mary Senior said:
"The approach of Cardinal O'Brien is most concerning and confusing, when it had appeared that the Catholic Church was engaged in the debate. Rather than approaching this complex and sensitive subject in a sensitive and mature way, the Cardinal appears to be frightening parents and raising concerns that are completely unfounded.
"With the numbers of people contracting sexually transmitted infections increasing, it is right that the Scottish Executive develops an appropriate strategy to address this. Knowledge empowers people, young and old, to make decisions that are right for them."
Ms Senior added:
"The STUC looks forward to seeing the Scottish Executive's response to the Sexual Health and Relationship Strategy consultation. We want to ensure that the strategy addresses issues for people of all ages, and, crucially, that it provides the necessary training, support and resources for the key workers that will be responsible for delivering it, such as nurses, health workers and teachers.
"The STUC urges the Executive not to be blown off course with its proposals to improve sexual well being and promote respectful relationships".
