NEWS RELEASE Thursday 8 April 2004
STUC Urges Workers to Register for Euro Vote The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) today urged all workers across Scotland to ensure that they are registered to vote in the forthcoming European Elections. The elections for Members of the European Parliament take place on Thursday 10 June, but the deadline for registering as a voter in Tuesday 13 April.
Mary Senior, STUC Assistant Secretary, said: "There are a number of reasons why the STUC believes that voting in the European Parliament elections is important for all workers across Scotland. Many positive employment policies that we are benefiting from in Scottish workplaces, originated from Europe. For example: the right to four weeks paid holidays, parental leave, and the right to time off to deal with family emergencies, all came from the European Union, demonstrating that Europe can make a difference".
"The STUC is also concerned that the European Elections are an opportunity for racist and fascist parties to gain a foothold in UK and Scottish politics. It is essential that all decent, democratically minded people use their vote on 10 June to say no to racism and fascism".
People can register to vote by contacting the Electoral Commission: http://www.electoralcommission.org.uk or by contacting their local authority.
