CALLING NOTICE
FRIDAY 28 NOVEMBER 2003
SCOTTISH TRADE UNIONS, COMMUNITIES AND POLITICANS CELEBRATE ST ANDREW'S DAY BY STANDING UP TO RACISM & FASCISM Trade unions, local communities, and politicians will join together on Saturday 29th November to celebrate St Andrew's Day with a March and Rally against racism and fascism. The St Andrew's Day March and Rally, organised by the Scottish Trade Union Congress (STUC) begins at Blythswood Square, Glasgow at 11am and ends with a rally at St Andrew's in the Square, Saltmarket at 12 noon. Speaking prior to the Rally STUC General Secretary Bill Speirs said: "The racist implications both of the war in Iraq and in our government's pursuit of its asylum policy is disturbing to say the least, and makes it even more crucial that our St Andrew's Day event sends a strong message that Scotland rejects racism and fascism. We are delighted that working people from across Scotland will join with politicians, local community groups, and anti- racist organisations in this trade union supported event to show that racism, ignorance and prejudice are not welcome in Scotland."
Speakers at the rally are expected to strongly criticise the proposed new Bill on Asylum and Immigration announced in the Queen's Speech this week.
Speakers will be available prior to and following the rally for interview and further comment.
