NEWS RELEASE
Communities Minister Works with Trade Union Women to Give Women a Voice.
Margaret Curran MSP, Communities Minister will today (Tuesday 18 November) address the STUC Women's Conference at St Andrew's in the Square, and welcome the establishment of the Scottish Women's Convention to provide a voice for women in Scotland. Margaret Curran said: "I am delighted that we are working with the STUC Women's Committee to set up the new Scottish Women Convention. The Convention will provide a mechanism for women's organisations to come together to discuss specific issues, and a vehicle through which to feed their views into the Executive, the Scottish Parliament and other institutions. The Convention's Steering Group is made up of 18 members from various Scotland-wide women's organisations, and it will have its first meeting on 16 December. A closer working relationship between women's organisations and the Executive can only make for more informed policy-making and hopefully for a better deal for women." Agnes Tolmie, Chair of the STUC's Women's Conference, welcomed the Minister's involvement with the STUC. She said: "Trade union women in Scotland are delighted to welcome the Minister to our conference. We very much appreciate the dialogue we have with her and the Scottish Executive. The STUC Women's Committee is pleased to be involved in the establishment of the Scottish Women's Convention. It is crucial that the women's perspective is incorporated into all policy making. Working women's involvement in the new convention will help to ensure that issues such as equal pay, childcare and poverty are addressed by decision makers".
