Scottish Union Learning in the Highlands and Islands

Following the changes to SULF 7 (Scottish Union Learning Fund) criteria to increase union led learning activity in the Highlands & Islands, nine of the twelve trade unions who were successful in gaining SULF funding have included some specific activity for the Highlands & Islands in their bids. The nine are ASLEF, CWU, FBU, POA, PCS, RMT, Usdaw, Unite and UNISON. UNISON’s bid is a wholly Highlands & Islands bid, while the remaining 8 unions have from 10% to 40% of their total activity planned for Highlands & Islands.

The project workers of the nine unions have met with the STUC and agreed where feasible to adopt a cross union approach to working in the Highlands & Islands. This means that where a group of unions propose to target workplaces in a specific area of the Highlands or Islands, they will work together in that area to promote union led learning, recruit ULRs and organise courses. Cross union activity is planned for Caithness in October and Orkney in December.

If you would like more information about the activity planned for these areas or any other area, please contact Pam Urquhart, Development Officer – Highlands and Islands, on 01463 248 905 or at purquhart@stuc.org.uk.
